Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare to apply emulsion wax and oil-based coating systems
  • Interpret coating requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
  • Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating including systems to ventilate chemical fumes and to meet environmental protection requirements
  • Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • Plan the work sequence to ensure efficient, quality application
  • Select coating materials considering the job instructions, the qualities of the materials, and their compatibility with each other and with the surface to be coated
  • Check the coating materials meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready for use according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
  • Confirm the surface to be coated is clean and suitable for coating, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • Erect signage and/or barricades around the area to be coated according to workplace procedures
  • Apply coating material according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
  • Reapply coating material as required according to the recommended time between coats
  • Buff and sand between coats according to manufacturer instructions
  • Check the floor is coated correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
  • Provide floor maintenance instructions and warranty provisions to the client according to workplace procedures

  • Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
  • Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
  • Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials

Assessment Tasks
